Being a customer service representative over the phone isn’t for everyone.
It’s the person everyone loves to hate and not everyone can deal with that negativity.
What many people don’t seem to realize is that a customer service rep is very rarely personally responsible for any inconvenience that a customer experiences. We are simply there to help if we can and if a customer has a problem with company policy there is often jack all a call taker can do about it. Anyway, I have a knack for not taking anything personally from a customer. What also helps the job to be less stressful for me is the fact that I get to work from home! This often gets me thinking about all the things that helps me avoid. For one, I don’t have to deal with an office that has a thermostat that is beyond my control. I’ve been in that exact situation in the past and it was terrible. Nobody seemed to care about how freezing cold me and some of the other women in the office were. Now I work from home and always set a perfectly comfortable temperature! I also don’t have to deal with nosy coworkers or a boss constantly hovering over me. That is great, but I think I am most happy about not being in an office with an uncomfortable temperature. When I am perfectly cooled off or nice and warmed up, I have always found it easier to be as polite and accommodating with customers as I can possibly be. It’s easier to be cheery when you’re in the comfort of your own home!
