The first day of school after a long summer break is always exciting. Working in an elementary school makes it an emotional day as well. It is just two days from the start of a new school year as we are all getting our classrooms ready. Unfortunately, it is pouring rain outside. When we first arrived this morning the janitorial staff was putting the final touches on the building and making sure it was sparkling clean for our students and staff. There were big bright signs on the entry doors warning us that the floors were going to be very slippery due to the weather and that we needed to take care when loading things into the classrooms. The district had hired a professional company to come in over the summer to strip and refinish all the floors in the hallways. Afterwards they applied a fresh coat of wax and the floors sparkled like glass. They were great to look at but treacherous at the same time. The school planned on putting down runners near the entryways before the students arrived in hopes of catching most of the water and mud on little feet as they came into the building. Our janitorial staff will do their best to keep up with the cleaning and waxing of the floors so we don’t have to go to the expense of having them completely redone anytime soon. It was worth the investment though because the professional company had all the machines and staff to do the job in half the time it would have taken our own to do it.
